Mystery needs structure.
Confusion is not depth. A strong mystery gives the visitor enough stability to notice what changes.
A difficult experience can be fair. An unexplained experience can still be coherent. The difference is whether the work contains a pattern the visitor can actually discover.
The escape rooms taught this clearly. When the instructions were inside the file, the solution felt earned. If the instructions had existed only in the developer's imagination, the room would have been slop with excellent lighting.
The surface should welcome. The deeper structure should reward return.
